The Immigrant Impact: Insights from Chica Project
Did you know? 2025 marked an all-time high for the number of immigrants in the United States. According to the Pew Research Center, there were more than 53 million immigrants in the United States in January, comprising 15.8% of the total population. In Massachusetts, the percentage is even higher at about 18.8% of the population – more than 1.3 million residents. More than half of all immigrants to the U.S. are from Latin American countries and more than a quarter are from Asian countries. Every year, immigrants contribute hundreds of billions of dollars to the U.S. economy by paying taxes, harnessing spending power, and participating in the work force. Immigrants make up about 17.7% of the labor force, filling roles in every industry and sector, including tech, healthcare, hospitality, agriculture, construction, and many more. In 2023, nearly 24% of entrepreneurs in the U.S. were immigrants, and 230 companies on the Fortune 500 list were founded by immigrants or children of immigrants.
Not only do immigrants play a major role in the U.S. economy, they are also foundational to the cultural diversity and vibrancy of our communities. Along with their economic power, immigrants bring parts of their cultures, such as food, language, art, music, sports, and traditions. The U.S. is a country built on the work of immigrants, and the diversity that they bring creates the foundation for American culture as we know it. From students seeking educational opportunities to families looking for a safe place to call home, the American Dream should be an invitation extended to all.
In a year marked by growing hostility and fear toward immigrant communities, we have witnessed both the pain of injustice and the power of collective resilience. While immigrant numbers have started to decline amid rising tensions, our strength continues to shine through solidarity, resource sharing, and care for one another. At Chica Project, we know that community is our greatest defense — we stand together to ensure that every person, especially those navigating life at the intersections of race, ethnicity, and gender, feels seen, supported, and safe. These times remind us that unity is not only resistance, but healing. No matter the challenges, we will continue to rise together, fueled by hope, love, and the unwavering belief that our dreams are worth fighting for.
