Wellness starts with WE.

Take part in Mental Health Awareness Month by joining a community that champions self-love and sisterhood.

Did you know that one in every five adults and one in every six youths in the U.S. experience a mental health condition each year? Mental health intervention is particularly important for young people as they navigate the most formative time in their lives. Mental illness is often called an invisible disability because it is not always apparent to others, yet millions of individuals face mental health challenges every day. Dealing with these kinds of issues can feel isolating; that’s why it’s so important to have a supportive and understanding community to remind us that we are not alone.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month—a time to encourage mental wellness and reduce the stigma attached to mental illness. Facing a mental health challenge can feel like trying to roll a boulder up a mountain, but it’s not something you have to do alone. Whether it’s confiding in a friend or seeking professional help, support is out there. Here at Chica Project, we believe in the power of self-love and community. We know that talking about mental health can be scary, and that’s why we’ve prioritized creating safe spaces for chicas to learn about mental wellness and what that might look like in their own lives. From affirmation exercises to wellness workshops, we provide opportunities for young Women of Color to practice self-care. Our programming even dedicates an entire module to this topic–that’s how important it is to us! By fostering a community of compassion and encouragement, we seek to break down the stigmas that so often deter young people from seeking help.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, we hope you feel empowered to be a part of the greater movement to destigmatize mental illness. Wherever you are in your journey, remember that you are not alone! Mental health doesn’t have to be invisible. Your path is your own, but we hope to be able to walk alongside you in community. If you want to make a tangible difference in the lives of young Women of Color and support a curriculum that fosters positivity, consider joining us in our mission to uplift the next generation of powerhouse leaders.

Your support is crucial—now more than ever. Chica Project is facing a time of urgent need, and we’re calling on our community to rally. Whether through monetary giving, in-person participation, or spreading the word, there are so many ways to get involved! After all, wellness starts with WE.
